Setsubun is the day before Rissun (the beginning of spring) in Japan.

It’s Feb.3 in the year 2016.

In Setsubun, we have a special ritual called Mamemaki, which is the throwing of roasted soybeans in and around one’s house. This is the ceremony to drive away evil spirits and to bring luck in.
So we did Mamemaki with our students. It’s a new experience for the new students and they enjoyed throwing the soybeans to our staff who put on an Oni (ogre) mask.

We hope the evil spirits that bring misfortune had been driven away 🙂
