Introduction of Hagi city
Hagi was founded in 1604, when the military commander Terumoto Mori built a castle there. Since then it has flourished as a castle town of 360,000 “koku” for about 260 years, until the office of feudal clan was moved to Yamaguchi at the end of Edo period.
It is one of the largest castle towns in Japan, whose old streets still have a vestige of the time. The map of Edo period can still be used so you can walk in the whole town like in a museum.
In addition, Hagi is widely known as the land of fetal movement of the Meiji Restoration, where many famous people were born, including Shoin Yoshida who made a base of modernization of Japan, Shinsaku Takasugi, Gensui Kusaka and Hirobumi Ito.
In 2015, NHK Taiga Drama “Hanamoyu” is broadcasted. Its heroine is Aya, the sister of Shoin Yoshida. The drama has made the end of Edo period more popular. It attracts people’s attention, and a lot of tourists come to this city from all over Japan. Buildings such as old factory site, revolutionary products, and education model that was the base of creating those industries, have contributed to the modernization of Japanese industry. Therefore “Meiji Japan’s industrial revolution heritage” is going to be registered to the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. History and culture of Hagi are evaluated, so Hagi reflection furnace, Hagi castle town and Shokasonjuku have been added to the list.
“Hagi ware”, a traditional craft representing Japan, was born in Hagi city. It is widely loved as Japanese-style vessel by people including tea experts. The features of Hagi ware is “Nanabake”, the phenomenon where tea strains enter Kannyu (cracks) on the surface of the vessel while it is used, turning it to a vessel of rich taste. Nanabake has a very deep relationship with “Wabi-Sabi” (aesthetic sense) culture of Japan. Hagi ware supports the traditional culture of Japan.
Hagi has its three sides surrounded by mountains, and faces the sea. So it has various delicious foods. It has a high reputation of its food from a mountain in every season and fresh fish caught in the sea just in front of your eyes.
