Setsubun is the day before Rissun (the beginning of spring) in Japan. It’s Feb.3 in the year 2017.
In Setsubun, we have a special ritual called Mamemaki, which is the throwing of roasted soybeans in and around one’s house or at a family member who wear ogre mask saying “Oni wa soto”! “Fuku wa uchi!”, which means “Ogre out! Luck in!” This is the ceremony to drive away evil spirits and to bring luck in. So we did Mamemaki with our students at our Hagi school. Thank you for those students who volunteered to act as the Oni!
