2018 Setsubun in Shimonoseki

In Setsubun, we have a special ritual called Mamemaki,

which is the throwing of roasted soybeans in and around one’s house or at a family member who wear ogre mask saying “Oni wa soto”! “Fuku wa uchi!”, which means “Ogre out! Luck in!” This is the ceremony to drive away evil spirits and to bring luck in. So we did Mamemaki with our students at our Shimonoseki school.
It has been 3 years since I started acting as the Oni.
The flu is going around now and some students didn’t look well at first. But every student enjoyed throwing the soybeans at me.
